about

One day I was walking across the street from where a girl I liked worked, and as I passed, I ran my hand through some flowers, as if putting on a little show in case she was looking.

Then I felt so stupid I did that and went home and was really depressed and I picked up the guitar and started making this song happen. The lyric hook comes from how nice it was that she was reaching out to me and asking me to do things with her, which I was charmed by.

I thought it was funny to say sort of archaic things in lyrics like “send for me.” Nobody actually says that. I think I picked it up from the masterpiece Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, which I was listening to a bunch at the time.

Although most of the song is silly, the coda is directly to her because she seemed sad at the time.

“Corduroy” is a word I’d put aside because I thought it’d sound good in a song.

One day in international film class, this girl next to me was saying she likes sewing or cross stitching or something because she is 80 inside. I thought it was a silly thing to say so I gently made fun of her with the old soul line.

But I do and always did like wearing vintage coats. Well, look at my coat on this album cover. A favorite I got at Sideshow when they first opened.

lyrics

I was feeling kind of bad
so I wrote a nasty note—
stuck it in your coat.
And your coat is corduroy.
And it's 35 years old.
Oh, but you're an old soul.
Wrap your red scarf around my neck.
Wrap that coat around my back.
That's why I belong here.
That's why you send for me.
That's why I belong here.

Carved my name in wet cement
out front the house you live in.
Oh, won't you just give in.
Combed my fingers through the flowers.
Made an ass of myself.
I couldn't get a laugh
from anybody else.

That's why I belong here.
That's why you send for me.
That's why I belong here.
That's why you won't let me be.
That's why I belong here.

I know it takes a little time.
I'm gonna try to lift you up.
I know it takes a little time.
I'm gonna try to lift you up.
